2024-2025 Scheduling Calendar
December 7, 2023: Counselors meet with Freshmen for scheduling in PCC classes.(Classroom presentation recording)
January 25, 2024: Counselors meet with Sophomores for scheduling in World History & Geography & History of the World classes (Classroom presentation recording)
January 30, 2024: Counselors meet with Juniors for scheduling in U.S. History classes. (Classroom presentation recording)
February 15, 2024: Counselors meet with Eighth Grade Students in Social Studies classes for online scheduling. (Classroom presentation recording)
Once your student's grade level has completed online scheduling, parents and students will have until February 5th to view and modify requests in PowerSchool. After this date, parents and students will only be able to view requests. Scheduling is NOT done on a first come, first served basis. Students will receive a pass from their school counselor to review their requests according to the following timeline:
February 2023: Juniors
March 2023: Sophomores
April 2023: Freshmen
8th Grade Information Night Presentation
8th grade parent night for the class of 2028 will be held on Wednesday, February 7th, from 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
8th Grade Pre-enrollment Information
The SHS counselors will be at SMS on Thursday , February 15th, to do online pre-enrollment with all 8th grade students. Your student's course requests can be viewed online in their PowerSchool account. After this date, the SHS counselors will review each student's requests, their grades, and the recommendations of the SMS teachers to ensure that students are registered for the appropriate courses. Parents will be notified of the opportunity to review these requests after any changes have been made. Course requests are considered final after May 1, 2024, unless they meet the schedule change policy guidelines listed on page 3 of the course guide.

Shelbyville High School offers various opportunities for students to earn college credits while still in high school. Students have the potential to earn credits through AP courses, and Dual Credit courses including the Indiana University Advance College Project program.

The Early College High School model gives students a head start on the rest of their lives. These small schools allow students to earn both a high school diploma and up to two years of credit toward a bachelor’s degree, or an associate degree. While open to all students, the model specifically serves low-income young people, first-generation college students, English language learners, and students of color, all of whom are statistically underrepresented in higher education and for whom society often has low expectations for academic achievement.
In today’s competitive world, a high school diploma only serves as a stepping-stone in a student’s educational journey. To achieve economic prosperity and lifelong success in the 21st century, all students must graduate high school and move on to college. Early College High Schools remove the academic, financial, and psychological barriers that prevent too many students from advancing to and succeeding in college. Students receive enhanced supports to help them excel both academically and personally. Since students earn college credit while in high school, the time it takes to complete a college degree is condensed. Students and families also benefit from reduced or free tuition costs. Ultimately, Early College High Schools turn obstacles into opportunities for student success.
The Advanced Placement (AP) testing program is under the auspices of The College Board. AP classes follow a nationally recognized college curriculum. The textbooks and materials used in these classes are the same as many college textbooks and materials. Many hours outside of class are spent reading, writing, and preparing for the course. The goal of each AP course is to prepare students for the AP exam in that subject in May. The AP exam is scored on a scale of 1 (low) to 5 (high). Colleges may grant college course credits or advanced placement into a higher-level college course for students who achieve a 5, 4, and sometimes a 3 on the AP exam. Students are expected to take the AP exam if they are taking the AP class. The cost of each AP exam is around $95. The state of Indiana usually pays the fee for AP Calculus AB, AP Chemistry, AP Biology, AP Environmental Science, and AP Physics. Students in AP classes will be given information about registering for the AP exams in October and exam fees will be collected at the high school prior to the exams. The exams will be given in May during school hours following the nationally established testing schedule.

DUAL CREDIT COURSES
Dual Credit Courses
Dual credit courses are defined as courses that are taken by high school students which can satisfy requirements for earning both a high school diploma and a college degree. Dual credit courses are taught by regular high school faculty or by regular or adjunct college faculty. Shelbyville High School and Blue River Career Programs have agreements with Indiana University, and Ivy Tech Community College to offer dual credit opportunities to our students.
The Advance College Project (ACP) is a cooperative program between Indiana University and selected high schools within the states of Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio. The Project offers college credit to high school seniors who enroll in IU courses that are offered at their high schools. Shelbyville High School offers Calculus, Finite Math, Chemistry, American History, and Elementary Composition/Literary Interpretation to students through the ACP program. Students taking these courses will have the opportunity to enroll with IU for ACP credit at the beginning of the school year. Students are required to pay a fee to IU for the course and in return, may earn college credit from IU. Fee waivers are available for students who receive free or reduced lunches. The ACP program maintains an updated listing of colleges that will accept this course for transfer credit from IU. Ivy Tech Community College
By enrolling in dual credit courses offered at Ivy Tech Community College, students save money and time. By getting a head start on earning college credit, students may finish their chosen degree sooner and by applying those credits towards an associate degree at Indiana's most affordable college, students will save thousands.
With full-time tuition under $4,200 per year, Ivy Tech is less than half the cost of other colleges and universities. If a four-year degree is in the future, students can apply their dual credits to Ivy Tech and then transfer to a four-year institution. For those who want a career in two years, those dual credits can give students a head start with Ivy Tech.

SHS offers Ivy Tech dual credit opportunities if a student qualifies and registers for the dual credit. Please note that some classes require students to be juniors or seniors to be eligible for the dual credits.
